Recommendations: The equipment I use and suggest

These are the categories of equipment I reach for most often in my own work. Each one includes a note on what it's for and when I'd suggest it, so you can choose what actually fits your dog rather than guessing in a store aisle.

Collars, Harnesses & Leashes

My preference is to always attach the leash to a harness so we avoid injury to delicate neck structures. I often use “no-pull” harnesses which have options for attaching the leash to either the chest or back (or both!). Collars are for tags, though if we need a bit of extra security, I prefer extra wide martingale collars to reduce the risk of injury.

Gates & Crates

Crates are excellent when you want to contain your pup to a small area for up to 4-6 hours. Though, if it’s an option, or if you need to contain your dog for longer periods, I prefer ex-pens as they provide a larger space where the dog can relax, play, and even have a potty station. If your dog can have more space than either of these, but we still want to contain them to a certain area, I look at gates to block off hallways or rooms.
